How You Can Fix Your Xbox 360 and Be Up and Running Tonight!

The three red rings of death just happened to me. There I was on Friday night playing Rockband with a buddy online, banging away at the drums, when it happened. At first I didn't believe it. I couldn't even talk to my buddy to tell him what had happened. I was just in the middle of a great drum solo! And my Xbox 360 froze solid. The three red rings of death were staring me in the face, almost mocking me.

The first thing you can try if this happens to you (and I hope it never does) is to unplug everything from your Xbox 360 console and let it cool down for awhile. After it sits for a while, try to plug all your stuff back into it and see if it powers back up. There is a slim chance that this can fix the system. If it does, consider yourself lucky.

If your system does come back up, then make sure to check out the surrounding area that your beloved console sits in. If it is in an entertainment center then try removing it from the unit. Any devices close to it that generate heat can cause your Xbox 360 to malfunction. What happens is that as the console gets heat, it melts the solder inside to the video card. This cause the unit to give you the three red rings of death.

The other thing you can check is the fan on the back. These consoles can collect major amounts of dust and this is something you want to avoid. If you notice that the console is dusty, carefully try blowing out the fan with some compressed air.

Hopefully these tips will help increase the longevity of your Xbox 360. New units shipped by Microsoft run cooler, but there are many consoles out there that have the red ring of death issue.
