Electric Guitar Technology 101

It is a curious paradox of the music industry: guitarists, particularly rock guitarists, are often thought of as trendsetters when it comes to fashion and culture; but when it comes to their instruments, they are notoriously conservative. Innovations such as active electronics, guitar synthesizers and Steinbergers intrepid steps into the field of headless instruments in the 80s have failed to make much of a dent in the market. Gibson and Fender continue to dominate the electric guitar market much as they did in the 1950s and 60s. Even with the entry of new competitors into the market over the years such as Ibanez, Paul Reed Smith and Charvel/Jackson, the electric guitar has remained essentially unchanged with one to three magnetic pickups and a mess of wires connecting them to the controls. But things may be about to change!

In the last couple of years a few innovations have come along that have totally turned conventional wisdom or at least conventional guitar electronics on its head. The first is the nylon string solid body electric guitar. I first saw one of these in the hands of metal ace Yngwie Malmsteen and was blown away by the sound. For any artist who is trying to incorporate elements of classical guitar in his or her repertoire, this instrument provides the mellow classical tone of a nylon stringed guitar with the comfortable feel and action of a traditional solid body axe. This has been made possible through the tremendous advances made in recent years in the field of Piezo pickup technology. Without going into too much technical detail, the Piezo differs from a traditional magnetic pickup in that the Piezo element vibrates with the string, sending an electrical signal of that vibration to a preamp within the guitar for processing, rather than capturing an electromagnetic representation of that vibration which can then be sent directly to an amplifier, or to an onboard preamp if further shaping of the signal is desired. The Piezo eliminates the need for steel strings, which would otherwise interact with the magnetic pickup, and also produces more satisfactory results for players with a lighter fingerstyle technique. Lest you think this is just another passing fancy, Parker has produced a nylon string version of their famous Fly model and another up-and-comer, Sadowski Guitars, is producing a Telecaster style model employing the same technology.

Another intriguing development is in the area of computer-guitar interface. This has been long time coming, and if you consider the explosion in the popularity of digital recording with Pro Tools and similar software, its surprising it took as long as it did. Far and away, the leader in this field is Line 6s Variax model. Now, I will be the first person to admit that I know just enough about computer technology to be dangerous, but Ill try to tell you what I know from what Ive read and from friends and acquaintances who have played the Variax. I should also state that I am in no way affiliated with Line 6 or any of their subsidiaries or partners. The Variax is, according to the Line 6 brochure a digital modeling guitar that allows the musician to switch between a huge array of potential sounds on one instrument. The sounds of a 12-string acoustic, Fender Stratocaster style single coils, Les Paul humbuckers, banjo, chimes and dozens of others are all available at the flick of a switch. The best part about it is that all of these tonal variations are available completely hum free. For the working musician, this means not having to lug around five to seven separate guitars to provide him with the all of the sounds he requires. The true test, however, is hearing one of these fine instruments in action, so if youd like to check one out, a list of authorized dealers is available from the Line 6 website. At an MSRP of around $1000 for the mid-line Variax 600 its also available in the 300 and 700 its not cheap, but for the professional or amateur with money to burn, it may be a worthwhile investment.

There is so much more to be developed in the near future with the improvements in computer technology and miniaturization. Whole racks of effects can now be had in a box the size of a cigarette packet. This is certainly a boon for the musician in terms of both price and the effort necessary to move the equipment. I foresee a day when an entire guitarist rig, with the exception of the instrument itself will be contained within the body of the guitar itself. And while that may not be a comfort to the guitarist who finds himself at home amongst his racks of effects processors, time waits for no man, and he will eventually find himself at a crossroads in musical instrument development, much as those men did back in 1930s and 40s when the acoustic guitar was forced to make way for the first electric guitars.

Mr. Parziale is a young man that is headed for greatness. His imaginative narration of Newl Rift (main character) and his adventure thru these mystical lands, will keep you glued to your seat. His experience with Role Play Games (RPG) has led to a very fast moving adventure.

Newl Rift is a very resourceful character. He does things that even fantasy characters would have trouble keeping up with. But then, he, too, is a fantasy character. He is also a man, one who likes his women and will do what ever it takes to aid a damsel (or in this case damsels) in distress. This dual attribute of his character puts him in some precarious positions, in particular, traveling with the likes of Mishell and Amate Luminata, the two beautiful sisters and rulers of Sactraz, a neighboring country.

Newl is a fighter, a leader for his people that many look up to. His adventures are a kin to Gullivers Travels in many ways. He travels with a mixed bag of military, royalty, and friends on his quest to bring peace to his beloved Gutra De and the world (Aldure). The forces of evil invade his inner circle and he is faced with the reality of someone's trying to kill him. The irony of the intrigue is that the assassin is an unexpected individual, one Newl would never have suspected.

Twilight of the Past is fast paced, very complex and detailed to the point of exasperating. Mr. Parziale, in his efforts to be thorough, gets into such detail, that he goes so far as to explain how Newl's communicator is attached to his tailbone, a detail I didn't really need to know....The book would benefit from a key for all the varied and colorful characters, which would make it easier for the reader to remember them all.

I believe that Twilight of the Past would make a great RPG game. I wouldnt be surprised to see it in software stores soon. Twilight of the Past is a continuing saga and there is more to come from Mr. Parziale. I look forward to seeing what happens next to the adventurous Newl Rift. Twilight of the Past is an RPG game in book form, gamers will love it.

This doesn't involve anything fancy or complicated; just simple, plain ol' good communication and people skills.

Eventually you can build cities in a SimCity-like way. Then you can trade goods or make war with your neighboring cities. Eventually you can build a UFO and fly off to space to colonize and explore new worlds.

We're excited to see what this game brings to the table, as the Sim games have always been fun, but will this game be able to live up to the hype? We're a little nervous about the continually shifting release date, ourselves, and hope it doesn't shift much further.

Video Game Industry to Undergo Serious Change

The video game industry is soon to undergo a serious change. A change that many feel is for for the better.

Currently video game manufacturers and publishers usually sign what is called an exclusive agreement. What this means is the video game hardware manufacturer, such as XBox, PS3, WII, etc. has the sole rights for that publisher`s particular game.

However this trend of exclusive deals may be coming to an end. In the November issue if Electronic Gaming Monthly, Evan Van Zelfden says, "that the agreements between game publishers and hardware makers called as third-party exclusives may be ceased in the future." Van Zelfden explains further, "that more publishers and developers were willing to create computer games that can be used for different gaming platforms such as Nintendo Wii, Sony Playstation, and Xbox 360 than giving an exclusive license to only one platform."

Not having an exclusive license allows publishers to develop a video game for multiple platforms. Van Zelfden agrees, "their games would have a wider market if it will be available in multiplatform versions."

It may be a while before the entire industry jumps on this "bandwagon" however there are a couple of games on the way. The games that would soon launch in multiplatform versions include "Devil May Cry 4" and "Grand Theft Auto IV".

Keep an eye out on this trend and the games that will be hitting the market soon. Soon you will no longer have to buy just the XBox to get a certain game and so on.

Sooner or later human beings on this beautiful blue and green planet are going to have to decide that peace is a function of one human mind at a time. Whether God is your Father, Allah, Jesus or Buddah, human minds, one after the other and in agreement have to change for the good and cooperate with a deeper knowing that if religion won't reveal it to you, quantum physics can. We are one in the same and we all belong to that same one thing. Every atom in your body has spent time in every other life form and person on the planet and today you will inhale some of the same ones that leaders around the world and the poorest of the poor did as well a few weeks or years ago.

Every atom that makes up our body was born in the combustion of stars and the body you physically have today is not made up of the stuff it was made up of just seven years ago. Your skin is new every thirty days. Your blood is new every three months. Your organs are new every year and all we do is retain the form of ourselves in ways that the new can replace the old. Be nice if a bad liver would disappear in a year, but the form of badness stays and gets replaced with badness. If it is good, it gets replaced with goodness and health. Plainly and literally, we on this planet are all one and the same, divided by boundaries, language and religion, but not in our being all one and of the same one thing.

Peace begins in each heart and mind and is not something you demand of others before demanding it of yourself. Everyone....look at me! Are you looking at me? Put down your damn weapons. Look your "enemies" in the face. Look at their children. Look at the wives, partners and relatives. Listen to their hopes and dreams and see how they cry just like you do when the shit hits their fan, delivered by you perhaps.

Put down the damn guns, knives, RPG's, bombs and conflicting religious memes and lookt each other in the face. We are all ONE and part of the One SAME THING. Jerk!

We can "realize it" through intelligent leadership, which would mean that most of the leaders on the planet would have to step down and be replaced by teachers, not those that think they already know everything and can twist it all to personal advantage. The whole Old Testament is the story of the jealous God kicking everyone's ass into obedience and the New Testament for Christians is the story of the kinder, gentler Son of the Kick Ass God urging humans to turn the other cheek. If you die, we'll get someone else who doesn't piss off the masses as much and can communicate better.
